Best Waterfalls with Camping Nearby
There's no better way to experience a waterfall than sleeping nearby — hearing the constant thunder, watching the mist rise at dawn. These ten have established camping (car, backpacker, or both) within walking distance. All ten on the map.
1. Helmcken Falls, Wells Gray, BC
Clearwater Campground 5 km from the 141 m Helmcken Falls. Tent and RV sites; spring through autumn.
2. Yosemite Valley waterfalls
Upper Pines, Lower Pines, North Pines campgrounds in Yosemite Valley — within sound of Yosemite, Vernal, Nevada, and Bridalveil Falls. Book 5 months ahead.
3. Skógar campsite, Iceland
Skógar Camping is 300 m from the base of Skógafoss — fall in the soundscape all night. Open mid-May to mid-September; basic facilities.
4. Niagara KOA, NY
KOA Niagara on the US side is 5 km from the falls — tent, cabin and RV sites, family-oriented, with shuttle to the falls.
5. Wilderness camping near Aber Falls, Wales
Carneddau wild camping above Abergwyngregyn allows tents within an hour of the falls. Snowdonia National Park; leave-no-trace rules.
6. Tumpak Sewu camping, Java
Local homestays and campsites at Lumajang village put you 20 minutes from the lower viewpoint. Wake early for sunrise mist.
7. Iguazú Sheraton & camping
Sheraton Iguazú on the Argentine side is the only hotel inside the park. Camping is available at Camping Itaipú in Puerto Iguazú town.
8. Voringsfossen Fossli hotel
Fossli Hotel (1891) sits on the cliff opposite the Vøringsfossen plunge — drift to sleep with the roar. Open May-September.
9. Cumberland Falls State Park, Kentucky
DuPont Lodge and campsites within 1 km of the falls. Moonbow nights draw bookings six months in advance.
10. Athabasca Falls, Jasper
Wapiti Campground (Jasper) is 30 km from Athabasca Falls. Combine with Sunwapta and Tangle Creek falls; full day.
