Best Waterfalls Within an Hour of Major Airports

On a long layover or a quick weekend trip, you can fit a major waterfall into a 6-hour airport stop. These ten are reachable in 60 minutes or less from international hubs — fly in, drive, photograph, fly out. All ten on the map.

1. Snoqualmie Falls (Seattle-Tacoma airport)

82-metre fall 50 minutes east of SeaTac via I-90. Free public viewpoint with wheelchair access; Salish Lodge overlooks.

2. Niagara Falls (Buffalo airport)

30 minutes drive from Buffalo Niagara (BUF). Park at the Niagara Falls State Park; free entry to the park, paid for attractions.

3. Múlafossur (Vágar airport, Faroe)

30-metre coastal fall in Gásadalur is 15 minutes drive from Vágar airport (FAE). Visit during the layover, no overnight needed.

4. Gullfoss (Reykjavík airport)

From Keflavík (KEF), 90 minutes drive. From the smaller Reykjavík city airport (RKV), 80 minutes. Standard Golden Circle day tour.

5. Multnomah Falls (Portland airport)

40 minutes east of Portland (PDX) on I-84. Reservation required May-September; free December-April.

6. Rhine Falls (Zurich airport)

Europe's largest by volume — 23 m tall, 150 m wide — is 50 minutes from Zurich (ZRH) by car or train. Year-round.

7. Cascata del Toce (Milan Malpensa)

143-metre fall in Val Formazza, 100 minutes north of Milan Malpensa (MXP). Summer release schedule June-September.

8. Saturnia (Rome-Fiumicino)

Hot-spring travertine cascades, 2 hours from Rome-Fiumicino (FCO) into Maremma. Free access 24 h; bathable.

9. Erawan Falls (Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi)

Three-hour drive northwest of Bangkok (BKK) into Kanchanaburi. Day-trip distance — leave at 5 am, return at 7 pm.

10. Kuang Si (Luang Prabang)

45 minutes by tuk-tuk from Luang Prabang airport (LPQ) — within layover distance. Most visited fall in Laos.
