Dettifoss — A Deep Dive
Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume, dropping 45 metres at 193 m³/s peak flow on the glacial Jökulsá á Fjöllum. The falls are on the map.
Power and scale
100 metres wide, 45 metres tall. Average flow 193 m³/s, peak 500 m³/s in summer glacier melt. The thunder is audible from 1 km away in the canyon.
Two sides
West bank (Route 862, paved, accessible easily from Ring Road) — distant view. East bank (Route 864, gravel, summer only) — much closer view, edge access. The two banks are not connected by bridge here.
In film
Opening shot of Ridley Scott's Prometheus (2012). The alien Engineer's monumental sacrifice scene was filmed here. Helicopter pull-back from the lip.
Geological setting
The Jökulsárgljúfur canyon was formed by catastrophic glacial outburst floods (jökulhlaups) — the canyon downstream is the second largest in Iceland. Continuing upstream is Selfoss (12 m); downstream is Hafragilsfoss (27 m).
Visiting practicalities
From Akureyri: 2.5-hour drive. From Mývatn: 1 hour. Visit east bank if conditions allow (4WD recommended). Bring waterproofs — spray reaches viewpoints. No facilities; closest fuel at Mývatn.
Best months
June-July-August: peak glacier melt, full flow. September: full flow with northern lights at night. October-May: roads closed, falls visible only by snowmobile or super-jeep with operator.
