Krka Falls — A Deep Dive

Krka National Park in Dalmatia contains seven travertine waterfalls on the Krka river, with Skradinski Buk as the centrepiece. On the map.

Seven cataracts

From upstream: Bilušić Buk, Brljan Buk, Manojlovac (the tallest at 60 m), Rošnjak, Miljacka Slap, Roški Slap, and Skradinski Buk (the most famous, 46 m total over 17 steps).

Bathing ban

Swimming at Skradinski Buk was permitted until 2020. Now banned to protect the fragile travertine. Other parts of the river outside the park still allow bathing.

Boat tours

From Skradin (lower entrance), a free park boat reaches Skradinski Buk. Paid tours continue upstream to Visovac monastery (on its own lake island) and to Roški Slap.

Visovac monastery

Franciscan monastery on a small island in Visovac Lake — between Roški Slap and Skradinski Buk. Reachable only by park boat tour.

Compared to Plitvice

Krka is smaller, less spectacular, but warmer (Dalmatian coast climate) and far less crowded. Best as a day trip from Split (90 km) rather than the long Plitvice loop.

Practicalities

Two main entrances: Skradin (with boat) or Lozovac (with shuttle bus). Pay entry. Open daily; reduced winter hours. Roman ruins of Burnum just outside the park.
