Top 10 Waterfalls in Scotland
Scotland's waterfalls are weather-driven: high after Atlantic depressions, low after dry weeks. The Highlands hold the tallest; the Lowlands offer historic mill-driven flows. All ten on the map.
1. Eas a' Chual Aluinn, Sutherland
Britain's tallest waterfall at 200 metres, on the Sutherland mountains. 5 km boggy walk to the viewpoint above the upper lip.
2. Falls of Glomach, Wester Ross
113-metre plunge in remote Wester Ross. 9 km return hike from the Killilan road; one of Scotland's most spectacular hikes.
3. Steall Falls, Glen Nevis
120-metre plunge in Glen Nevis, reached by a short walk through a gorge from the road end. Wire rope bridge to the base.
4. Falls of Foyers, Loch Ness
Twin falls on the Foyers river, total 60 m. Praised by Robert Burns; pedestrian path from the village. Reduced flow due to hydro abstraction.
5. Plodda Falls, Glen Affric
46-metre plunge in a Caledonian pine forest. Victorian iron viewing platform extends out over the lip — best vantage in the Highlands.
6. Falls of Bruar, Perthshire
Three-step cascade near Pitlochry, planted with conifers at Robert Burns's request after his visit in 1787. Maintained loop trail.
7. Falls of Clyde, New Lanark
Series of four falls on the Clyde at the UNESCO mill village of New Lanark, used to drive 18th-century cotton mills. SWT reserve.
8. Falls of Falloch, Loch Lomond
10-metre plunge on the River Falloch in Glen Falloch, at the head of Loch Lomond. Stone-walled plunge pool; A82 layby parking.
9. Reekie Linn, Angus
A double drop totalling 24 m on the River Isla south of the Cairngorms. Mist (the 'reek') rises continuously from the gorge below.
10. Mealt Falls, Skye
55-metre coastal fall plunging directly off a basalt sea-cliff at Kilt Rock, Trotternish. Strong wind frequently blows the water back upward.
