Spain's waterfalls cluster in the Pyrenees, the Picos de Europa, and the Mediterranean travertine valleys. Several are reduced by hydroelectric abstraction; others run year-round. All ten on the map.

1. Nervión Falls, Burgos/Álava

222 metres — the tallest fall in Spain, off the Sierra Salvada escarpment. Spectacular after rain; often dry in summer.

2. Cola de Caballo, Ordesa

Horsetail in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido national park (Pyrenees, UNESCO). 8 km walk from the parador via the canyon floor.

3. Cascada del Cinca, Pirineos

Plunge at the head of the Cinca canyon, above Bielsa. Glacial flow strongest in July.

4. Salto del Nervión

Famous viewpoint above the 222-m drop; circular trail 5 km. Mirador del Salto with safety railings.

5. Cascada de Ézaro, Galicia

The only river in continental Europe that falls directly into the ocean — the Xallas, 40 metres. Released on weekend evenings in summer.

6. Cascada Cimbarra, Jaén

20-metre fall on the Guarrizas in Sierra Morena. Granite rock above, popular bathing pool below.

7. Cascada del Río Mundo, Albacete

The 'Reventón' karst spring near Riópar erupts on irregular days — when it does, a 70-metre cascade pours from the cliff. Unpredictable schedule.

8. Monasterio de Piedra, Aragón

A complete park of small waterfalls in the gardens of a Cistercian monastery near Calatayud, including the 'Cola de Caballo' (50 m).

9. Cascada del Cardal, Cantabria

30-metre fall in the Picos de Europa near Liébana. Forested approach trail; year-round flow.

10. Cascada del Asón, Cantabria

70-metre karst spring waterfall at the head of the Asón valley. The river emerges directly from the cliff. Best in spring.
