Best Desert and Canyon Waterfalls
Desert waterfalls run on geological rather than meteorological time. Some are spring-fed and flow year-round (Havasu); others appear only after the rare storm. Both types reward patience and timing. All ten on the map.
1. Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon
30-metre turquoise plunge on the Havasupai reservation, fed by year-round karst spring. 16 km hike from Hualapai Hilltop; permit required.
2. Mooney Falls, Havasu Canyon
60-metre fall below Havasu — descent via chain ladders and a wet tunnel through the travertine. Strenuous.
3. Calf Creek Falls, Utah
65-metre plunge into a deep red sandstone canyon in Grand Staircase-Escalante. 5 km flat hike from highway 12.
4. Toketee Falls, Oregon
Two-tier 37-metre fall through columnar basalt in the Umpqua Canyon, dry-summer climate. Year-round flow from hydro release.
5. Salto del Nervión, Spain
222 metres off the Sierra Salvada — Spain's tallest, but often dry. Best after heavy spring rain.
6. Cibadak Falls, Sahara region
Rare canyon springs in the Maghreb produce small but year-round cascades in the Anti-Atlas. Berber-guided hikes from Tafraoute.
7. Pailón del Diablo, Ecuador
80-metre fall in the Andean cloud forest east of Baños, on the edge of the Amazon basin. Suspended bridge and walk-behind ledge.
8. Cataract Canyon ephemeral falls, Utah
After monsoon storms, hundreds of seasonal cliff falls run from Cataract Canyon's rims into the Colorado below. Visible from rafting trips.
9. Ouzoud Falls, Morocco
Triple cascade dropping 110 metres in the Middle Atlas. Bathable pools below; barbary macaques in surrounding forest.
10. Akchour, Morocco
Two-tier cascade in the Rif mountains near Chefchaouen — God's Bridge natural arch is just downstream. Bathable pools.
