Best Spring-Fed and Perennial Desert Waterfalls

In deserts and dry climates, year-round waterfalls are rare — most are seasonal flash-flood events. The exceptions are spring-fed (karst aquifer) or fault-fed (geological water source) systems that flow regardless of rainfall. All ten on the map.

1. Havasu Falls, Grand Canyon

30-metre turquoise plunge fed by year-round karst spring. 16 km hike from Hualapai Hilltop; permit required.

2. Akchour, Morocco

Two-tier cascade in the Rif near Chefchaouen, fed by year-round karst springs. Bathable pools; God's Bridge natural arch nearby.

3. Ein Gedi, Israel

David's Fall in the Judean Desert near the Dead Sea — fed by a year-round desert spring. National park; entry fee.

4. Mooney Falls, Havasu

60-metre fall below Havasu, same karst source. Chain-ladder descent to base — technically demanding.

5. Sof Omar Falls, Ethiopia

Cascades inside the Sof Omar cave system — Africa's longest cave river, perennial spring-fed.

6. Wenchi Crater Falls, Ethiopia

Crater-rim cascade fed by year-round lake outflow, 220 km west of Addis Ababa. Combined with horseback or boat tour of the crater lake.

7. Tassili spring falls, Algeria

Karst springs in the Tassili n'Ajjer plateau (Sahara) produce small year-round cascades — visited by Tuareg-guided expeditions.

8. Petra siq cascades, Jordan

Within Petra's siq narrow canyon, springs and rare rain produce occasional waterfalls — and devastating flash floods. Year-round springs at Wadi Mousa town.

9. Wadi Bani Khalid, Oman

Karst spring-fed cascades and bathable pools in a slot-canyon wadi — Oman's most popular swimming destination. Modest dress required.

10. Ras al Jinz desert spring, UAE/Oman

Tiny spring-fed cascade beside an Indian Ocean turtle-nesting beach. Year-round trickle in a dramatic dry coastal setting.
