Top 10 Waterfalls in India

India's waterfalls follow the monsoon. The Western Ghats and the Meghalaya plateau receive among the heaviest rainfall on earth, producing hundreds of seasonal cascades. Visit August-September for combined flow and trail access. All ten on the map.
1. Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya
At 340 metres the tallest plunge in India, off the Cherrapunji plateau into a turquoise pool. Peak flow July-October.
2. Jog Falls, Karnataka
Four parallel falls on the Sharavathi, total 253 metres. Heavily reduced by the upstream Linganamakki dam outside monsoon.
3. Dudhsagar Falls, Goa-Karnataka
A 310-metre four-tier cascade on the Mandovi, falling beside the Konkan railway viaduct. Reach by train or jeep from Mollem.
4. Athirappilly Falls, Kerala
A 24-metre curtain on the Chalakudy, 330 metres wide — India's Niagara. Year-round flow but spectacular July-November.
5. Kunchikal Falls, Karnataka
A 455-metre multi-step cascade on the Varahi. Restricted access (hydroelectric reservoir downstream); designated viewpoints only.
6. Shivanasamudra Falls, Karnataka
Twin falls (Gaganachukki, Bharachukki) on the Kaveri, total 98 metres. Site of Asia's first hydro plant (1902). Best September-October.
7. Hogenakkal Falls, Tamil Nadu
Series of low cascades on the Kaveri at the Karnataka border. Wicker coracle boats ferry visitors. Closed in high monsoon.
8. Bhagsu Falls, Himachal Pradesh
A 20-metre cascade above McLeod Ganj/Dharamshala in the Dhauladhar foothills. Easy walk from Bhagsunag temple.
9. Chitrakote Falls, Chhattisgarh
Horseshoe waterfall on the Indravati, 29 metres tall but over 300 wide in monsoon — India's widest. Locally called the 'Niagara of India'.
10. Talakona Falls, Andhra Pradesh
An 80-metre fall inside Sri Venkateswara National Park near Tirupati. 1.5-km forested walk; bathable base pool.
