India's waterfalls follow the monsoon. The Western Ghats and the Meghalaya plateau receive among the heaviest rainfall on earth, producing hundreds of seasonal cascades. Visit August-September for combined flow and trail access. All ten on the map.

1. Nohkalikai Falls, Meghalaya

At 340 metres the tallest plunge in India, off the Cherrapunji plateau into a turquoise pool. Peak flow July-October.

2. Jog Falls, Karnataka

Four parallel falls on the Sharavathi, total 253 metres. Heavily reduced by the upstream Linganamakki dam outside monsoon.

3. Dudhsagar Falls, Goa-Karnataka

A 310-metre four-tier cascade on the Mandovi, falling beside the Konkan railway viaduct. Reach by train or jeep from Mollem.

4. Athirappilly Falls, Kerala

A 24-metre curtain on the Chalakudy, 330 metres wide — India's Niagara. Year-round flow but spectacular July-November.

5. Kunchikal Falls, Karnataka

A 455-metre multi-step cascade on the Varahi. Restricted access (hydroelectric reservoir downstream); designated viewpoints only.

6. Shivanasamudra Falls, Karnataka

Twin falls (Gaganachukki, Bharachukki) on the Kaveri, total 98 metres. Site of Asia's first hydro plant (1902). Best September-October.

7. Hogenakkal Falls, Tamil Nadu

Series of low cascades on the Kaveri at the Karnataka border. Wicker coracle boats ferry visitors. Closed in high monsoon.

10. Talakona Falls, Andhra Pradesh

An 80-metre fall inside Sri Venkateswara National Park near Tirupati. 1.5-km forested walk; bathable base pool.
