Best Walk-Behind Waterfalls in the World
Walk-behind waterfalls happen where a softer rock layer has eroded backwards under the harder caprock, leaving a natural cavity. Path engineers stabilise the floor and add handrails. Expect to get wet. All ten on the map.
1. Seljalandsfoss, Iceland
65-metre fall on Iceland's south coast — the classic walk-behind. Slippery basalt path; closed in winter for ice safety.
2. Cave of the Winds, Niagara
Wooden walkways descend under Bridal Veil Falls on the US side, getting visitors directly into the spray zone. Re-built every spring (the original is dismantled each winter).
3. Steindalsfossen, Norway
50-metre fall in Hardanger near Norheimsund — the rock curves outward above the impact zone, forming a natural dry corridor.
4. Sgwd yr Eira, Wales
'Snow Waterfall' on the Hepste in Brecon Beacons — the centrepiece of Welsh waterfall country. Slippery ledge.
5. Behind Multnomah, Oregon
Walk-behind in the lower step's spray pocket; not a true tunnel but visitors get drenched on the misty trail.
6. Madakaripura, Indonesia
Walk through the spray of entrance falls into a circular cave-like chamber with a 200 m central plunge. East Java, near Bromo.
7. Tannforsen, Sweden
Sweden's largest fall by volume, with a maintained stair path that passes behind the impact zone — at certain water levels.
8. Behind the Falls, Niagara Canada side
Lift descends 38 m into tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls' base — the original walk-behind experience, opened 1888.
9. Tahquamenon, Michigan
Walkways extend toward the lip of the Upper Falls — not strictly behind, but among the spray, on the largest falls east of the Mississippi.
10. Donut Falls, Utah
Short hike to a tight chamber where the creek pours through a hole in the rock above — a true walk-behind (and into) cave.
